I am not a mechanic or a carpenter, but I have acquired most of the tools necessary to keep up a home and fences do minor projects over 30 years. I had a 50 sq ft tool room in my garage that made me very unhappy. You could not find anything except accidentally, and things just acreted to the room over time--if nobody knew where to put something, it ended up in the toolroom. There was no room to work, and there were tools in about 8 different tool boxes, but labels kept coming off of them over the years, so you had to go through them all to find anything.

In a fit of utter disgust and desperation, I first went to Sears to see what Craftsman had. To be short, their cabinets were more expensive and less well built and unavailable in town.

I had seen these before, so I orderd this from Amazon, together with the Modular Drawers and the Worksurface. The cabinets have bumpers on the fronts and sides, and they are really built tough. They won't stop a 9MM round, but the load bearing surfaces, the casters, the hinges and doors and top are all solid and well-finished (no rough or sharp edges). There is a substantial area of steel with pegboard holes inside the doors, so you can hang "thin" tools such as adjustable wrenches in those areas. The drawer/shelf (it has about a 1.5" lip on it) and is very sturdy. It assembles easily and quickly for even a guy like me is not the handiest. The magnetic seal on the doors means you don't have to lock it to keep the doors from opening. I use it to store all of my power tools in their cases, and it is great for that. My wife also thinks they are very attractive, and the surfaces seem to be easy to clean.

i recently ordered this cube shelf to store my towels and clothes. it fits 7 beach towels in one cube, about 9-10 jeans. its the perfect size and I LOVE IT :) it came in very fast and well packed! the only down fall is if you want to move it around it will be difficult because it will fall apart..but it will stay strong if kept in one area, so if you are planning to always rearrange your room, it might be a bit of a hassle. but other than that its a perfect shelf!

Akro-Mils 40716 Accessory Dividers for Plastic Storage Hardware Cabinet Small Drawers, Pack of 16

These dividers are fine but make sure you check the back of your parts organizer and see if you have the original dividers still attached. After I ordered these, I saw that the dividers that are supposed to be included are actually part of the back of the frame and can be popped off.

That said, these ones feel a little bit better. They are made of the same flexible plastic as the drawers as opposed to the hard plastic of the original ones and popping them off the back is kind of a pain.

Great Neck GN205 205-Piece Home Tool Chest Set

I ordered this to have a set of tools I could fit in a kitchen cabinet and get my bigger tool set out of sight and back to the garage. It was not immediately obvious to me looking at the Amazon description that this was about a 2/3rds size tool set, everything is slightly smaller than regular tools. This is not a big deal for a light use tool kit in the kitchen but no one would want this to do any serious work with it. Hang a picture, pull out a nail, unscrew something, no problem.

The overall quality seems ok so far, although I have not put any of the tools to even the lightest test, but there was nothing flimsy about them (other than the small size). I am giving them 4 stars as it fits my purpose and I may have been partly responsible for thinking that a 12.8 inch wide tool box was going to hold a 13inch hammer.

Suncast Vertical Tool Shed

This is a solid body storage building exactly as advertised. My goal was to store a mower, trimmer, blower, gas and miscellaneous items. I had to build a shelf (not included) notch it to fit and install it before putting roof in place. It works great for gas and miscellaneous items leaving room for taller items but they must be tilted some. If you have a mower with retractable handles (which I do not) it will fit in this building. (So mower is still out) Other than that it has cleared up the mess in the back and locks the flammables up too.

Be careful to read instructions because it would be very difficult to take pieces apart after clicked into place.

If you are planning to store a mower I would recomend a larger unit just for ease of use. This one is great for a lot of gardening supplies but I think they should provide at least 2 or more shelves.

The Bulldog Hardware 131588 Peg-A-System Ultimate Kit

For only $23.00, that's what you'll be getting, so keep that in mind. While I'm not totally dissatisfied given the price, I was surprised with the hardware that came with the set. The cheap drywall screw heads (#2 phillips) strip immediately upon hitting the underlying studs so I instead used self-tapping deck screws to mount. Remember, the peg board is made of plastic, so if you use a powerful electric screw gun to drive the threads home, you'll break it and sink right through if you're not careful. Otherwise, I'd recommend you pre-drill your holes before mounting.

Another let down, I have a 4 lb. shop hammer I tried to hang, but the weight was too much for this peg board to handle. This is definitely for light tools only, but if that's all you will be using it for, then you'll probably be satisfied. My mistake was reading the name of the kit, "Bulldog," but in reality, it rates more like a Dachshund.

Rubbermaid Configurations 4-to-8-Foot Deluxe Custom Closet Kit

I have used all three of these. I first bought the Elfa (Container Store) for one bedroom. It was extremely expensive. Spent 5 times more than the others for something very simple. Everything is cut for you once you have the measurements. It is very sturdy and very well made, of course. It is probably over kill for a closet organizer. They have a lot of nice accessories for it and can be dressed up to look nicer than the others. Biggest negative which really surprises me since Closetmaid and Rubbermaid doesn't have this problem is you can't slide a hanger all the way across.

My next project was using Rubbermaid. I liked the idea it was adjustable. It was very easy to install. I bought the delux 8 feet kit. One problem is you will sometimes have left over parts and in my case I also had to buy one extra part since the way I wanted it was a little different that what options you had with their kit. After installing it I found I just didn't need to change it, so the adjustability probaly was not a plus for me but some people may want to make changes after using it for awhile. Biggest negative which really isn't a negative is that it is flimsy compared to the Elfa which is like a tank. That is because it is adjustable but it is sturdy enough. I have no problems with that. Another possible negative is it only comes with 12 inch shelves for closets. If you really need something bigger you can go into their garage sections which has 16 inches shelves.

My last project was Closetmaid. I used Closetmaid for my wife's closet since she wanted 16 inch shelves and I didn't feel it needed to be adjustable. Now if you don't want to be doing your own cutting which can be a chore without the right tools then go with Rubbermaid. But I have the right tools so cutting was not a problem. I bought mine at Lowe's. If you have all your measurements you can do the cutting their. They have a bolt cutter that cuts right through it. I did all my cutting at home since I have bolt cutters and metal saws. I like Closetmaid since it was sturdier than Rubbermaid and I just buy what I need. It also has a nice selection of accessories from wire drawers to shoe organizers. What I really liked is their clothes hamper. It pulls out on a slide then pushes in after you throw your dirty clothes in.

Now the surprise is the vertical hangers for all three companies all have the same slot design. How the verticals hang on the wall is differnt but once you have the vertical hangers secured you can interchange most accessories. I can install shelf supports for any company on any one of the vertical hangers. So I used the Closetmaid clothes hamper in my Rubbermaid closet. Closetmaid shelf supports and shelves will fit on the Rubbermaid or Elfa vertical hangers and vice versa.

If money is not a concern then buy the Elfa, built like a tank will last forever and looks better than the others with the right accessories.

Rubbermaid is the least sturdy of the three but does the job. It is very easy to put up so if your not handy around the house then buy this one. You also can easily make changes to how you want the shelves organized much more so that the other two. If you want 16 inch shelves then look at their garage organizers, the system is the same.

I like Closetmaid but it does require more work to put up since you have to do all the cuttings. It is much sturdier than Rubbermaid since it is meant to be permanent once you put it in. Shelves snap in place which took some effort and would be difficult to remove. Rubbermaid has a simple slide to lock shelves in so you can makes changes easily but then again you give up some sturdiness.

Update 12/12/2011

After having used all three systems for almost three years I can say all of them hold up well. I haven't had any problems so my original feeling that Rubbermaid tend to be flimsy is still not a problem. I don't think you can go wrong with Rubbermaid and it is very easy to put up and being adjustable gives you room to customize the way you want it. Having parts left over is more of a mental problem because the cost of the kit is still probably cheaper than buying each part by itself even with the left over parts or you can try using all of it. Also as I said before you can use Closetmaid accessories with Rubbermaid and although I like my Closetmaid clothes hamper it did fall apart which was replaced by Lowe's at no cost.

I recently did my daughters closet using Rubbermaid but these were not adjustable. You buy what you need and cut to fit (Home Depot). These being not adjustable felt much sturdier. I did find putting in the shelves to be easier than Closetmaid. Closetmaid shelves snap in and are very tight. The Rubbermaid ones were just easier in that it has a slide that locks the shelves in place but Rubbermaid is more expensive than Closetmaid so you pay for this one feature.

I would be embarrassed if you walked into my once-neat tool shed right now. Bags of nails and screw, boxes of electrical stuff, plumbing and pipes and stuff everywhere. It takes me 10 minutes to find the right nails.

This thing really did just what i needed. I wanted a different type made by deflect-o but they cost too much for plastic. Those ones did have a really nice tilt out design. Now back to the Stack-On. I like how the bins have a lid that swings down and snaps into place to keep everything inside. I keep my work supplies in it and can take them with me on the road to work.

It can fit a jumbo chisel tip marker inside of a bin on the diagonal angle. I got mine from a different retailer because i wanted to get it the same day(there is a famous tower named after it that starts with an S and ends with one too).Saved a few bucks as well.

The build quality is not amazing but should be ok if you take good care of it. If you drop it there is a good chance you would break the lids. The holes used for mounting on the wall probably could have been reinforced to improve durability there. For my money i could not find anything better. Really got me organized. I find myself wanting more for the garage and my workspace.

I purchased this item because of the number of drawers it has & because it has 2 different sizes of drawers. I think it is a good storage cabinet. It may be made a little cheap but it is definitely made strong enough to store the weight of the items you will be putting in it. One reviewer stated about the tabs needing to be shorter but if they were shorter, the drawers would easily fall out. In my opinion, the tabs are just the right length because who wants the drawers to fall out? As an added tip, I suggest mounting this cabinet against a wall because the cabinet is definitely more sturdy mounted against the wall.

Excel 4 Drawer Steel Roller Tool Cabinet

This item looks sturdy. It looks like it should be a match to anything at Harbor Freight. However, this item was incredibly flemsy and could not even support its own weight on the casters!

The hinges that hold the casters are so fragile, they bend under the weight of the toolbox EMPTY. So I had to remove the casters.

The drawers are difficult to open and close. You have to really push and jiggle to close them.

The top toolbox "sits" on the lower toolbox. There is no "mount" of any kind to mount the top box securely to the lower box. I had to drill holes in both boxes and lock them together with nut and bolts, so the top box would not slide around (then off) of the lower box.

I bought this item because it was cheap. I expected it to be less than high quality, but this toolbox is utterly worthless.

Wireless Motion Sensor Light - 10 Super-Bright LED

I bought two of these (a better deal, and at this writing the same two sellers offer the two-fer: 10 LED Wireless Motion Sensor Light 2 Pack Easy to Install). While not precisely as described, they get the job done (or at least have so far).

Pluses: bright light from the 10 LEDs, low drain on batteries, no wiring needed.

Minuses: in my experience, the sensor range is much less than the description states (I figure three to four feet); seem to be cheaply made (in China, if that matters to you); the three-position switch (off/constant-on/motion-sense) seems cheap and is positioned such that it's hard to move, which may or may not be an issue for you (if you're leaving it permanently set to sense motion, it won't matter); in one of my two units, the three-position switch was wired backward relative to the labeling, an indication of poor quality control; as other reviewers have noted, (1) there is no "daylight off" function (except to move the three-position switch to off, which is a nuisance), and (2) there doesn't seem to be any heat sensing.

All in all, not a purchase I'm sorry I made. For my use, they're adequate. For some, the negatives may outweigh the good price.

Sterilite 5-Shelf Shelving Unit - 73.25 x 36 x 18 Inches - Platinum

This Sterilite 5-shelf utility storage unit is one of the finest consumer products I've seen in a long time. Being an industrial engineer, I'm not easily impressed. But I am impressed by the quality and low price (I paid $32 at Amazon with free shipping) of this unit.

Assembled, it has a nice look. The 150 pound limit per shelf is staggering considering it is made of plastic and marketed for non-industrial use. The color of the material is neutral and nice while the physical properties of the plastic are excellent. These combine hardness vs. softness for maximum static strength perfectly. (Some manufacturers make storage racks like this too brittle allowing for minimal deformation under load. However, this brittleness, inherent in the material, makes them easily broken.) Sterilite has balanced both to make a shelf hard enough to maintain form under load but soft enough to take dynamic stress without breaking.

Proper assembly takes about a half hour. There is one simple diagram on the rack banner that shows how it should be put together. No written description is given or needed as assembly is so simple, a child could do it. I do however have several suggestions for proper assembly listed below.

Starting with the bottom shelf on the floor, place four vertical posts into the four corner holes smaller side down as shown on the supplied diagram. You can try to push them in using your strength, but I used a hammer, a block of wood, and a sock placed between the wood and the top of the post to prevent damage to the post. Once placed into the top of the hole, just tap the post into place until it bottoms out. After all four posts are tapped down into position, measure the height of the posts from shelf-top to assure consistent insertion. If there are some that are higher than others, keep tapping the higher ones firmly until all have equal height.

Then place the next shelf onto the four posts. Position the corner holes over the posts and begin to push down on the shelf working around the four corners halfway at a time. When reasonably seated, put a cushion like a folded towel on top of the corner holes and strike them with your hand to finish seating them (if necessary).

Keep checking post height and floor to shelf-top height all the way up to the fifth shelf so you know the all posts and shelves are properly seated. After you are satisfied that assembly is complete, place the unit onto a level area of your floor. If the floor is not level, you can position leveling blocks under the four post corners where the unit contacts the floor. (Leveling the rack can be especially important if you are going to place relatively heavy loads on the shelves.) Before you know it, you're done and in possession of a very nice piece of engineered home-storage utility shelf unit.

Dyna Glo Delux, RA18LPDGD, 18,000 BTU Propane Cabinet Heater

I've had the heater for a few days now, and it has been working great for me, kicking out plenty of heat.

The heater has three adjoining burners, each rated at 6000 BTU. Each burner is either on or off, and each is controlled by the gas valve on top of the cabinet. Low setting is the center burner only. Medium is the left and center burners together, and high is all three on at once. Each burner has a ceramic element with many small holes that the gas flows through as it burns, heating the ceramic bright orange hot and putting out a lot of radiant infrared heat rays. Of course there is also hot air rising from the burners too, and that contributes to warming a room. The radiant heat feels great, especially when you come in from the cold and want to warm your hands.

Some reviewers reported difficulty keeping the "pilot" lit. The pilot is actually an oxygen depletion sensor or ODS. It is designed and tuned so that if the oxygen in the room falls below a safe level the flame will go out, triggering the gas control to shut off the gas to the burners. The heater is not designed for outdoor use, and in fact the manual says it's for indoor use only. If used outdoors, any breeze will blow out the exposed pilot, aka ODS.

The user manual describes this as a "construction heater." There is a disclaimer in the manual saying the heater is not suitable for residential use. I regard both of those as coming from the manufacturer's legal department. But I can think of at least two reasons why it could be dangerous to use for home heating. First, the heater is unvented, so although it burns cleanly with a blue flame and negligible carbon monoxide when it is new and clean and perfectly adjusted, eventually partially clogged air inlets on the burners could result in carbon monoxide release. I would not use this heater indoors without a CO alarm in the room to monitor it.

A second reason it's not for residential use is that it runs from a common 20 lb. propane bottle of the kind used for gas BBQ grills, and those tanks are not safe for indoor use or even storage. The tank sits mostly inside the open back of the metal cabinet. Of course people do use them in residences, and usually there is no problem, as long as all of the gas fittings are tight and the flex hose is in good condition. But eventually you could have a propane leak that could lead to a fire or explosion. That's why the user manual says to always turn off the gas at the tank valve whenever you turn the heater off, because that eliminates most of the potential sources of leaks. But what happens if your house is on fire and there's a 5-gallon tank of propane inside? The tank won't explode and rupture because it has a safety pressure relief valve to prevent that, but it will release a lot of propane in a hurry, and inside a burning house that's not a good thing.

There are multiple safety features engineered into the heater. One is a tipover or bump sensor located inside the top of the cabinet next to the gas control. If you bump the heater medium hard while it is operating it will immediately shut off. There is also another sensor in the propane regulator that attaches to your propane tank. The manual says to connect it to the tank so that the flatter side of the regulator is up. I missed that when I first hooked it up, and couldn't get the pilot to light. I reviewed the setup instructions, saw what was wrong and corrected it. The manual says never use any other regulator with the heater than the one it is supplied with, and that's because it has this tip-over regulator built into it. Since fixing the regulator orientation it has worked perfectly every time.

After the heater has been used for a while, eventually house dust, cobwebs or woolie boogers drawn in with air will partly block the air inlets of the main burners and/or the pilot ODS. The manual goes into this and tells you to clean it with a vacuum cleaner or compressed air. The ODS is sensitive by design. Its job is to prevent the heater from burning in a closed room until it has used up enough oxygen to start producing carbon monoxide. Of course you should never use the heater without adequate ventilation, and the manual tells you so.

Another safety feature is a chrome reflector panel extending forward from the bottom of the burners. It keeps the floor directly in front of the heater from getting too hot. But there are no similar reflectors to limit radiant heat going to the sides, so you will need to be careful not to have anything flammable close to the side and slightly in front of the heater. The metal cabinet of the heater does not get very hot, largely because of the open back.

The wheels make it easy to roll the heater from place to place, and two of them have locking brakes to keep it from rolling if the floor isn't level, and to keep the heater from being moved or re-aimed due to an accidental bump.

I'm very pleased with this heater as a supplemental or backup heater for an unheated work room in my house. If I start it up on high, it warms the roughly 500 sq. ft. room pretty quickly, and I turn it down to low to hold the temperature. I'm conscious of the potential dangers, and use the heater carefully, making sure to close the tank valve every time when not in use, and checking that the ODS and main burner flames are clean and blue.

This is not a fully automatic idiot-proof appliance. It could kill you, but that's also true of your car and a good many other things that we must use with care. This heater has many safety features, but in the end you have to use the one built into you -- your brain.

Gladiator GALG36CKXG EZ RTA Mobile Storage GearBox Cabinet on Casters, Hammered Granite

I shopped online for garage cabinets for quite a while. I eventually decided on Gladiator Garageworks cabinets because they offer more than one size of wall cabinet and because I found a great deal on cyber Monday.

I received and assembled three of these cabinets yesterday. They take a full hour to assemble once you know what you're doing. The instructions suggest assembling the cabinets primarily in the face down position, but after three of these, I prefer to assemble them upside down, until it's time to put in shelves and add the doors. The smaller screws can be tricky to get started -- they appear to be aluminum so they gall up easily.

I only had one quality issue -- on one cabinet the "Gladiator" logo was put on the back of the cabinet. I used dental floss (a trick I learned from de-badging my BMW) to remove the logo, because it would have been impossible to assemble the cabinet otherwise.

It's a decent cabinet at half price, but I wouldn't pay much more than that.

Quick - Shelf Hangers Overhead Ceiling Mount Storage Unit

Okay, I bought these because of the great price and reviews. They were quick to install, but I was really upset by the conflicting or incomplete technical data provided.

On the "Technical Data" portion of the product page, it states that these units can have up to 1,400 lbs capacity. It also states that these units have an overall size of 24-1/2" deep X 19" tall X board length (They recommend 10 ft max for 3/4" thick wood).

Well when you open up the installation instructions, it clearly states that the maximum recommended span is 3 feet for normal duty and for light loading, 4 feet is permissible. This is not what was advertized on the product page and makes a big difference on what can be stored. Also, after you install a 3/4" board, you are only left with space for items that are 16" tall or less. I guess if you only screw in the "lag eye screws" in half way, you might get something that is 19" tall into the unit, but this would definately give you less weight capacity.

Unfortunately, I didn't notice the spec difference until I had installed two of the three units I purchased (my bad). I use 8 foot spans on my installation. I am going to leave them up, but I will only be able to use them for light storage which is not what I intended them for.

I am totally dissapointed by the inaccurate or conflicting technical capacity specs. I have always received excellent products from Amazon and their vendors. I really feel let down and taken advantage of by this product's vendor and possibly Amazon's complicity.
